President of Prince George’s Community College in Maryland since July 2007, Dr. Charlene Mickens Dukes became the school’s first female in that role. The college serves nearly forty thousand students in more than sixty programs and also partnered with Howard Community College in the establishment of a regional higher education center. Dukes earned a Bachelor of Science in English Education from IUP in 1980. She earned her master’s in 1982 and doctorate in 1992 in Administrative and Policy Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. She began her career in higher education as an admissions and financial aid officer at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. She became the assistant director of admissions at the Community College of Allegheny County on the Allegheny Campus in 1981, and she was named director of admissions in 1987. She later served as the director of minority affairs and in 1995 became dean of students. She joined the executive staff of Prince George’s Community College in 1995 as vice president for Student Services and served in that role until her appointment as president. Dukes received the Women of Achievement Award bestowed by the Southern Maryland Business and Professional Women’s Club in 2006. In 2001, she was named Outstanding Administrator of the Year at Prince George’s Community College and Administrator of the Year by the Maryland Association of Higher Education. Founder and lead faculty for the Community College Student Development Leadership Institute, Dukes is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the National Leadership Academy. She is a member of the Council of Law in Higher Education and the Maryland Network. She is also a member of the Maryland State Board of Education, the League for Innovation, the College Summit Board of Directors, and the Maryland Multi-Cultural Youth Center. She is an adjunct faculty member in the Community College Leadership doctoral program at Morgan State University. She also serves Prince George’s County as a member of the Round Table, Women’s Leadership Council for the Chamber of Commerce, and the Women’s Fair Committee and is on the Harlem Renaissance Festival Board of Directors. She is a United Way of the National Capital Area college coordinator, a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and an active member of Kettering Baptist Church. She resides in Glenn Dale, Maryland, with her son, Maurice. Dukes is a 2008 recipient of the IUP Distinguished Alumni Award. Profile published on 6/30/08
